Biography

Lynyrd Skynyrd, formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964, became the defining voice of Southern rock with their gritty blend of blues, rock, and country influences. Fronted by Ronnie Van Zant alongside Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, and other core members, the band rose to prominence in the 1970s with anthems like Sweet Home Alabama and the epic Free Bird. Their dynamic guitar work, storytelling lyrics, and unapologetic Southern identity set them apart, earning them worldwide recognition and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Despite tragedy, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legacy endures as a symbol of resilience and the enduring spirit of American rock.

Fun Trivia

The band’s name was a cheeky nod to their strict high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who often scolded them for their long hair — a playful jab that turned into one of the most iconic names in rock history.
